Why Graphic Design?

My graphic design adventure kicked off in 2016 when I was just in 7th grade. While many people think my passion for graphic design stems from a love of traditional art, that’s only part of the story.

Growing up, I was captivated by "The Hunger Games" series, both the books and the movies. One day, while scrolling through Vine, I stumbled upon an amazing video edit featuring clips from "The Hunger Games," perfectly synced to music with cool effects. I was blown away! It looked so easy and fun that I decided to give it a try. Little did I know, creating those edits was far more challenging than it seemed—it took countless hours of practice to craft something truly eye-catching.

When Vine shut down, I shifted my focus to Instagram, where I discovered a whole new world of creativity: photo edits. Once again, I was drawn in, thinking it would be a breeze. But as I dove into photo editing, I realized it involved advanced skills I didn't yet possess—like graphic design techniques and photoshop. Without access to Photoshop, I had to get creative with the tools I did have.

From that pivotal moment in 2016, I was hooked. My passion for graphic design blossomed, and I’ve been honing my video editing and design skills ever since. Each project has been a thrilling challenge, fueling my desire to push boundaries and explore new creative horizons!

WHY SPORTS DESIGN?

I grew up a fan of the Chicago Blackhawks, my hometown team, a love I inherited from my dad, who was a huge Blackhawks fan himself. In the 2010-2011 season, he took me to my very first hockey game. It was an Original 6 matchup between the Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings. I remember sitting high up in the stands, taking in the energy of the arena, and feeling completely captivated by the game. From my seat, the players and the puck looked tiny, but the action on the ice was so fast and thrilling—it was unlike anything I had ever seen.

Though the Blackhawks lost that night, something clicked inside me. That game ignited a deep love for hockey that I still carry to this day. In the days that followed, my dad tried to get me to watch Blackhawks games on TV, but I wasn’t sold. I complained that the camera was too close and that I couldn’t see the entire ice like I could at the game. But I was hooked, and I kept begging him for more tickets. Eventually I grew to love watching the Hawks on TV. That first game was the start of a lifelong love for the team, and I’ll always be grateful to my dad for sharing that experience with me.

Sports have always been a central part of my life. I grew up playing three sports, with basketball being my favorite. I spent hours practicing, trying to improve my skills. When I was in 7th grade, I started exploring graphic design. At that time, I kept my worlds of sports and design separate. I didn’t want to mix the two. While I was aware of sports design, I always thought it was repetitive and lacked creativity.

In 2023, everything changed when I discovered the Detroit Red Wings' social media graphics. They were unlike any sports graphics I had seen before—innovative, fresh, and full of personality. That moment opened my eyes to the possibility that sports graphics could be innovative, fun, and creative. Since then, I’ve fallen in love with designing sports graphics. I’ve truly enjoyed blending my two passions—sports and graphic design—in a way I never thought possible.
